“Irresistible Sham Tseng (深井) Roast Goose by Yue Kee (裕记)”
Yung Kee, the go-to spot for its award-winning roast goose, sits in the heart of Hong Kong on Wellington Street. Though convenient for tourists and business travelers, it might leave your wallet feeling lighter, and the dining experience seemed a bit too commercialized.
I had reservations about Yung Kee, so I opted for the laid-back Yue Kee in Sham Tseng, nestled in the New Territories. Despite its offbeat location, it’s easily accessible, marked by a standout sign at the entrance. The restaurant, hidden behind a small cobbled bridge, has a charmingly dated exterior.
Yue Kee, a local favorite for decades, won me over. The roast’s crispy skin was unbelievably good, leaving a lingering aroma on the palate. A hidden gem away from the hustle and bustle.
Yue Kee, like many roast goose places, hails the century egg dish as a perfect match. Surprisingly, it lives up to the hype! The wet yolk has a flawless consistency, silky smooth without sticking to your teeth. Paired it with slightly sweetened ginger slices – a refreshing contrast to the rich roast. A delightful palate dance!
红烧山水豆腐Yue Kee’s menu goes beyond roast goose – from stir-fried goose intestine to braised goose tongue and more. We played it safe this time, sticking to the meaty delights.
Tried the 红烧山水豆腐 (Braised ‘Shansui’ tofu) – made with pure stream water for enhanced smoothness. Served with Shitake mushrooms on a bed of stir-fried spinach, it’s a flavorful combo. A healthy touch with potential benefits – a win-win!
Not to forget the 鲮鱼球豆腐汤 (Handmade Dace fish balls with tofu clear soup) – ordered by mistake, but surprisingly tasty. Tofu overload though! 😅
Portion sizes were generous, easily feeding up to 4 people. We may have overordered, but it’s better to be safe. Estimate for your group: Whole goose (for 6-10), half goose (for 3-4), quarter goose (for 2), upper or lower portion (extra HK$20 for drumstick). We paid a reasonable HK$300 for a 4-course dinner.
Getting there was a breeze – MTR and a bus from Sham Tseng station. Follow the signs, cross the bridge, and you’re at the restaurant. Easy peasy!
Yue Kee Roasted Goose Restaurant (裕記燒鵝飯店) @ Sham Tseng, 9 Sham Hong Road, New Territories (新界深井深康路九号). Precise direction for you here, check out My Note Book on The Web.
For a sweet ending to your roast feast, check out Fa Kee (发记), a dessert spot by the main road. Locals highly recommended it, but our stuffed stomachs forced us to miss out. What a shame! Next time, dessert adventure awaits!

I just went to eat at Yung Kei Restaurant yesterday coz recomend by most ppl at HK. To be honsest, I also found the goose there is not that special at all apart from the nice restaurant renovations. And mostly i dont like is their service which tends to look down on us…….their service to us i would say “REALLY BAD & DISCRIMINATION”, as evidence by the dish that we ordered compared to our next table customerd, where they will given hot towel for greetings and smiles. I should have read go to Yue Kei if I do read your blog. However trying elsewhere for the roast goose at Hay Kitchen that can be found around Wan Chai, the goose there I can said still taste good and the way they treat us foreigner still considersble good. Over all, Yung Kee is just nothing but just some over ratings restaurant and after all those hypes thst surround the restauant.
