Nian Gao, also known as Chinese New Year Sticky Cake or Mochi Cake, is one of the must-have auspicious foods during the Lunar New Year. It symbolizes progress, good fortune, and “rising higher” in life.
Traditionally, we don’t eat the plain sticky cake on its own. Most families deep-fry it in batter, often sandwiched between sweet potato and/or yam slices. But there are many creative ways to enjoy Nian Gao these days.

One of the newest (and easiest!) methods is to cook it with prata. Super simple, quick to prepare, and incredibly delicious.

传统上,大家不会直接吃原味年糕,而是会裹上粉浆油炸,夹着地瓜片、芋头片一起炸得香软可口。当然,年糕的吃法其实有很多变化。
近年最受欢迎、也最简单的一种新吃法,就是把年糕和 Prata 一起煎!步骤超容易,成品又香又脆,甜糯可口,让人一吃就爱上。

This is my super quick cheat-recipe for a crispy, gooey Nian Gao Prata. No thawing needed, using frozen prata gives you that perfect crisp on both sides without turning soggy inside. Yes!

Ingredients:
- Frozen prata (do not thaw)
- Nian gao (3 – 5 thick slices)
- A little cooking oil
材料:
- 冷冻 Prata(无需解冻)
- 年糕 (3到5厚片)
- 少许食用油
Instructions:
- Lightly grease a frying pan and heat it up.
- Place the frozen prata onto the pan and pan-fry until the bottom side turns lightly crispy.
- Flip the prata over.
- Place slices of nian gao on the cooked side.
- Fold the prata in half to wrap the nian gao inside. Press gently.
- Continue pan-frying both folded sides until golden and crispy.
- Remove from pan, cut into pieces, and serve immediately for the best texture.
做法:
- 平底锅抹上一点油,加热。
- 放入未解冻的 Prata,煎至底部微微变脆。
- 将 Prata 翻面。
- 在已煎过的一面放上 3 片年糕。
- 将 Prata 对折,把年糕包在里面,轻轻压一压。
- 持续煎至两面金黄酥脆。
- 取出后切块,趁热享用口感最佳。
Tips:
- Serve hot, crispy outside, sticky sweet inside, perfect!
- Using the prata straight from the freezer keeps BOTH sides crispy, instead of turning soft or soggy from the melted nian gao. It’s also easier to maintain the prata shape unless you are thinking of making shapes.
