Steamed Minced Pork with Salted Egg

"Go for its aroma, taste and texture of this minced pork and salted duck egg dish!"

No doubt this is a convenient and simple dish, if you are going to fix a quick dinner meal during busy working days.

My family including myself loved this simple steamed dish. The tasty sauce with a hint of natural sweetness yielded from the juicy steamed pork together with the aromatic salted egg was truely appetizing. My girl who does not really take pork, finished almost half the amount from the dish!

Adding of excessive cornstarch helps in creating smoother and more bouncy texture of the stemed pork. Hence, I added 2 heaping teaspoons of cornstarch instead of just 1.

And due to my work, I marinated the minced pork overnight. It gave better and stronger flavour to the pork, in fact.

So, don't miss this juicy steamed pork dish next time when you are fixing a homecooked dinner!

Ginger and Spring Onion Pork Dish (姜葱猪肉)

"Delicious home-taste pork dish you can never resist."

This pork dish is one of the most popular Asian dishes, be it homecooked or dine-out order.

Remember the aromatic ginger and spring onion (also called it scallion) plus a touch of fragrant oyster sauce in its marination provide the classic stir-fry flavour in both the smooth bouncy pork and fragrant thick gravy. It simply complements just a plate of plain steamed white rice at its best.. This is truely mouth-watering!

To have it at its fullest and for more complete diet, I have added carrot strips which indeed go so well with the rest of the ingredients in it.

Bitter Gourd Pork Ribs Soup with Wolfberries in Slow Cooker

"Slow-Cooked Healthy Vegetable Soup"

Hi there, how are you? It has been many days since my last update of post.. Even though I still cook during these busy days, but was really too occupied by tons of chores, and no choice but to miss my recipe sharing. Well, I am back now.. (smile).

Today, not posting any HK gourmet, I am sharing my soup recipe here. One of my reader, Ms Lin Li, left comment in my FB fanclub and requested for more soup recipes, actually. And I promised her to share it in the upcoming post after my last chicken dish. So, here you go..

Nothing too special, but I thought this is very simple to cook and healthy to savour on.. This is a soup that you will definitely drink, even if you don't take bitter gourd. Without the strong and bitter taste from the gourd, and I have even added wolfberries to sweeten the soup naturally, there isn't any reason for you to reject this delicious and beneficial homecooked soup! While bitter gourd cools your body, the wolfberry aids in brightening your eyes.

Forget to mention, this recipe is tailored for busy working class. If you are working 9-5 or needing to be out half the day, yet you wish to have such nice health soup for the family and of course yourself, this is the soup recipe you would like.

Preserved Black Bean Chicken (豆豉鸡)

"An authentic Asian chicken dish that truly whets your appetite."

This wonderfully aromatic chicken dish is one of my favourite Cantonese dishes. We called it 豆豉鸡 (Dow Xi Gai), in Cantonese. It's easy on preparation and big on flavour!

Prepare more rice and you may end up double your usual amount this time.

Remember to get the whole preserved black soy bean (豆豉), and NOT the minced soy bean paste (豆瓣酱). It usually comes bottled which already flavoured, some with oil and some with chili, off the shelves. Unless the flavoured whole black bean in bottle is your only option or you actually prefer to have it spicy, cook this chicken dish with original preserved whole bean, which you may try getting it from neighbourhood Chinese provision shops or minimarts. Use of whole black bean reserves the natural black bean flavour in the dish, and you may also get to bite and taste the whole bean.

Vegetarian Fried Rice (with Egg)

"Simple and quick vegetarian fried rice with dark soy sauce, for the whole family during weekdays."

Yesterday was Chu Yi (1st day of Lunar March). I am not very good at cooking vegetarian dishes, seriously. So, I was really head scratching all the time when come to vegetarian days, twice a month. As weather was hot, I did not want to cook curry dishes. Just to keep it simple but filling, I had no choice but to fry rice, again.. Cooked this vegetarian fried rice improvised from my previous recipes, I think this fried rice turned out deliciously!

Simple to cook and delicious to eat even if you are not a vegetarian. And, as usual, my fried rice wasn’t greasy since I used minimal amount of oil to cook it. To make my fried rice dish more fragrant and tasty, of course, I added the dark soy sauce which I’ve gotten from my last Hong Kong trip.

Homecooked Fried Bee Hoon for Breakfast

"Breakfast Fried Bee Hoon for my office buddies"

Last week, two of my office buddies and I had craving to eat bee hoon for breakfast when saw the fried bee hoon dish selling at our office cafeteria, but we stopped ourselves from buying it as it looked so greasy which actually curbed our ravenous, then. So, I decided to fry my own bee hoon for the next morning.

The recipe of this fried bee hoon was posted long ago (see recipe: Stir-Fried Bee Hoon with Stewed Pork), but this time, I had to double the amount of my original recipe to cater all 8 - 10 of us, and also cooked it with slight variations.

My bee hoon dish was not greasy at all, and yet, it tasted so moist, tender and flavourful.Yeah, my bee hoon was a big hit!

Fragrant Soy Sauce and Condiments from Kowloon Soy Co, the Traditional Soy Shop in Central, Hong Kong Island.

"A traditional soy sauce and condiments shop in Hong Kong"

Many people told me that soy sauce made in Hong Kong is so much tastier than from any other places. My mum had reminded me to remember to get a large bottle for her, and I ended up with many large bottles of different sauces flied back to Singapore, because I found this place.. Kowloon Soy Co (九龍醬園).

In fact, this place was again recommended by Mr. Cai Lan in his recent food show, 蔡瀾品味. I was eager to go check out this place. So, we planned it such a way that we could have some good food for lunch around this area (上环, Sheung Wan/ 中环, Central), at the same time, visit the shop.

After our fish soup noodle at the recommended fish soup shop, Shang Kee's, we took a slow walk through a local wet market, and I was pleased by the cleanliness of this market.

My Hotpot Dining Experience at Tao Heung (稻香超级渔港) in Hong Kong

“My first not-so-pleasant hot pot dining experience with Peir 88 of Tau Heung branch restaraunts in Hong Kong. Read this now and pick up some tips ad tricks here on how to order your hotpot meal in Hong Kong pleasantly!”

2nd day of my HK 'return' trip, we had ALL-TIME-BEST Dim Sum brunch at the City Hall Maxim's Palace (大会堂美心皇宮) located at City Hall Low Block 2nd Floor, Hong Kong. I strived to make it a sure-thing to have Dim Sum there again whenever I return for a vacation. I simply loved the Dim Sum here, especially their steaming hot, soft and flowy custard bun with fragrant salted egg yolk, still as nice as a year ago..

Well, with no extended elaboration on this again (since I have posted this in my previous post: Hong Kong DIM SUM at Maxim Palace City Hall), I am going on to my super-lavish hot pot dinner!

Signature Crisped Bun & Fresh Tomato Soup Noodles at 胜香园 on Sheung Wan, HK Island (香口脆脆和番茄汤面在上环胜香园大排档)

“All-time packed authentic road side store which you shouldn’t miss it, for their signature fragrant crisped bun and refreshing tomato soup noodles!”

Sheung Wan/ Chung Wan (上环/ 中环) area has so many good eating places including the very famous Lian Xiang Lou (莲香楼), for Dim Sum breakfast, but in fact, were not really impressed by it, frankly (will review later). Today, what I am going to recommend this truly locally value-for-money breakfast place, the Hong Kong 大排挡 (road side store) named 胜香园 (Mandarin as: Sheng Xiang Yuan; Cantonese as: Sing Heong Yun).

We first knew this store from one of the TVB drama series where the father of the main lead in the show was running road side store business with a similar name of 胜芳园 (Sheng Fang Yuan). Hubby was wondering if such store did exist in real life, and so, he searched thru the net and found the real store at exactly the same location! Yeah!!
