Sang Kee Fresh Fish Soup Bee Hoon at Sheung Wan, Hong Kong Island (上環生記鮮魚汤米线)

We booked our hotel accommodation in Tin Hau area (next to Causeway Bay) where plenty of yummy street food were found. Right after checking in, we were eager to find some food to fill our famished stomachs. However, we did not hang around Tin Hau area for street food. I thought the popular noodle soup would be just right for us, for its convenient location in Sheung Wan, where I needed also to shop for my soy sauce (from Kowloon Soy Co.), and some nice and cheap boots from a streetside stall there. Without further delay, we set off quickly, by MTR.

Since it was weekday noon hour, this tiny shop was swamped by lunchtime crowd, mainly the locals. Many customers were seen waiting eagerly for their turn to get seated. No queueing needed, the shop operates a simple paper ticket queuing system. Though just a hand scribbled ticket number, it was good enough to handle those hungry customers. Upon arrival, just approach the front counter, inform your headcount, take the paper with your designated number and head outside. Afternoon Tea @ The Lobby at The Peninsula Hotel, Hong Kong

Apparently, this was a trend. Really. Seemingly dedicating only to the rich and formal, countless numbers of tourists were spotted, too. 

Yes, this place. An elegant afternoon tea rendezvous for the rich “tai tai” (wealthy Mrs.), often featured in the Hong Kong TVB shows. In Hong Kong, they called it, 嘆下午茶 (taan haa mm cha). Haha.. It made me curious to find out more.

To our surprise, there was a very long queue even at the time of 5pm! What? 5pm More

Steamed Winter Melon and Clams Soup

Healthy seafood & melon soup which was done with steaming method. Not the usual boiling stuff direct from the stove though, soup made from steaming method yields very smooth mouthfeel. It gives a very soothing effect to the throat and even the entire body. For whom does not really like clams, would love this. Subtly flavoured soup was without a trace of ‘fishy taste’ which usually found in the clams. Not mine! Winter melon in the soup was very soft, too.

This simple yet palatable clear soup dish with seafood and melon should be cooked and consumed more often, if you are such a health freak like me (smile). Well, just kidding.. but it’s true that this dish is a must-try homecooked soup dish, drink it to cool and sooth the body and clear body system, or when feel like having some milder flavour dishes for the evening. Fragrant Stir-Fried Bitter Gourd with Duck Egg

This is one of the few dishes which have been my favourite dinner dishes to be cooked at home over the years. Just because I cook these for many times, I have to vary the cooking method of these dishes with some new ways, sometimes.I cooked stir-fried bitter gourd with black beans, and now, I would like to introduce another fragrant and delicious bitter gourd dish here. Don’t look at this bitter gourd dish that way, please~ This bitter gourd dish tasted so good and NOT bitter at all! Yup, this dish was delicious, soft and fragrant in the palate, with a secret addition, the raw salted duck egg.

I did not use the usual chicken egg to create the egg drop effect in my bitter gourd dish. A ‘preserved/ salted‘ duck egg was used. Need not to pre-boil the salted egg, but use it straight from raw egg, after washing away the layer of muddy salted charcoal coated on the shell. And no worries, this duck egg will not make the dish too salty like tasting the hard boiled salted duck egg. Instead, adding of duch egg makes the dish much more fragrant. Duck egg white was smoother, and its yolk was more moist and fragrant in the palate while chewing it together with the bitter gourd. More
